Natural insecticides

Gardeners have used a number of natural ingredients to reduce the impact of insects upon their gardens. Many insects are essential to plants, however many cause considerable damage, especially when found in large numbers. There are a number of recipes that can be used  as general all purpose insecticides, some to get rid of mildew and some that provide fungicide protection.

All Purpose Insecticide

Useful to reduce plagues of caterpillars, flea beetles and aphids, without causing damage to other beneficial insects or the plant.

Combine equal amounts of garlic, chopped onion, mint and lavender flowers and stems and place in a bucket. Cover with boiling water and allow to steep for 24 hours. Strain liquid into a spray and use accordingly. The garlic also provides some fungicidal protection

CHIVE TEA

Particularly effective at treating mildew, although needs to be applied several times.

Make an infusion, by putting a generous amount of chives in a bucket and covering with boiling water. Allow to steep overnight, strain liquid and spray accordingly.
