Where do we stay?

Guests are provided with 6 nights B&B accommodation. We will provide a daily transport service to and from our home, Cortijo de Suenos, apart from one morning when we will lead a guided walk up the mountain in order to identify local herbs.

What about food?

We will provide a delicious lunch every day as well as a homemade selection of teas, drinks and snacks to keep your appetites at bay! Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary requirements and we will try our best to cater for them.

What happens in the evening?

It’s up to you! After a day in our company the evenings are all yours to spend as you wish. The traditional Spanish town of Lanjarón is right on your doorstep with a great array of bars and restaurants, as well as the many spa treatments for which this beautiful Moorish town is famed. For more information or tips and advice, feel free to ask us at our home, Cortijo de Sueños or pop into the Tourist Information Centre which is on the main street. Click here for more information.

Do I need any specialist equipment?

Other than a pair of stout shoes, sun protection and suitable clothing, all you need to bring is an open mind, a keen attitude and a pair of willing hands. Sun, Sea and Self Sufficiency is an energetic, fun and hands on course and every member of the group is expected to muck in, get their hands dirty and contribute as we are convinced that this is the most enjoyable and effective way of learning the core skills of self sufficiency. On leaving, each guest will take away with them a folder containing information sheets, recipes and samples of the produce that they have made.

Who is this course for?

  • Anyone who has thought about escaping the rat-race.
  • Anyone who has thought about becoming more self sufficient but doesn’t know where to begin.
  • Anyone who has thought that they would like to be a little greener, but is confused by all the contradictory advice that is out there.
  • Anyone who is living or thinking about living off-grid in remote areas.

Our Sun, Sea and Self Sufficiency course is an introductory experience and is designed to give a guiding hand to those just starting out. It is not a course for those already experienced in self suficiency.

Why choose us?

Our approach to self sufficiency is not one of earnest martyrdom. While thorough and pragmatic, we are not advocating the wearing of hair shirts but instead we attempt to do the best we can without foregoing life’s little luxuries. We do not preach, we do not patronise and we do not aim to convert. Instead we provide an opportunity for those who want to become more self sufficient to learn the basic skills in a fun and lively environment surrounded by other people with similar interests. As a guest on one of our courses, we will enable you to dip your toes into the pool of self sufficiency without getting your fingers burnt.

The course runs for 5 days from Monday to Friday and starts at 9.15am daily - you will be picked up from the village and driven to our home, Casa de Sueños - finishing at about 5pm, or later if you wish! Lunch with drinks will be provided daily, along with refreshment breaks.

To get the most out of living self sufficiently and to prevent stiff muscles, and those aches and pains that can affect all of us, each morning will start with a few gentle warm up exercises. We believe it is vitally important to keep fit and supple.

There are four core subjects that make up each morning session, however, these are not classroom sessions. You will be getting your hands dirty making things, designing solar systems and waste water systems etc.

Core Subject 1: Organic Gardening

  • Soil health & organic compost
  • Crop rotation
  • Companion planting
  • Natural insecticides & fertilizers
  • Pests & diseases
  • Permaculture & biodynamics
  • Pruning, harvesting & storing

On the Wednesday we will walk from the village to our house, Casa de Sueños, to identify local herbs and wild flowers. You will learn how to use them, including those you can eat. The afternoon will be spent making herbal products and alternative medicines, including eco-friendly cleaning products.

Crafts & Skills

In the afternoons we offer a number of additional introductory courses that complement the mornings' activities. In order that we can offer you the best options we would appreciate your indication on the booking form of what your preferences would be from these topics:

  • Soap Making
  • Breadmaking
  • Ropes & Knots
  • Building – dry stone walls, composting toilets
  • Adobe bricks
  • Pottery

In addition to the core subjects and the crafts and skills, we also discuss how to make a living from a self sufficient lifestyle, from bartering to selling your organic produce; just what are the things you need to consider before you take the leap! As well as some of the more mundane issues such as insurance and self-employment.
